Wrong country on a site or map? Check where the exit really is

Why a site or map can show another country than your proxy's, and how to check the exit with our proxy checker.

Updated 2 min read

If a site or a map puts your proxy in a different country, the proxy is usually fine and something else is reporting the location. Here is how to tell which.

Check what a site sees

  1. Turn the proxy on in the browser you are testing.
  2. Open the proxy checker and click Check my connection.
  3. Compare the Address and its country with the address on the proxy's page in the dashboard. The country is the part to trust. City level differs from database to database.
  4. Read the WebRTC line. A second public address means a page can see past the proxy.

Usual reasons for a mismatch

  • Database lag. Location databases update on their own schedules, so an address that moved recently can still show its old country somewhere.
  • Maps and weather pages often ask your browser or device for its location and ignore the IP address. Clear that site's location permission and reload.
  • A normal window carries extensions, cookies and cached permissions. Test in a private window with extensions off.
  • Anti-detect browser profiles have their own time zone, language and geolocation. If those do not match the exit, sites see two places. Align them with the exit location.
  • DNS or WebRTC leaks reveal an address or resolver outside the proxy. Send DNS through the proxy and set WebRTC to follow it or turn it off.

Depending on the product you ordered, the location you chose may be a country only.

When the exit itself looks wrong

Send the exit address, the page that shows the wrong place and the checker result to support@proxyhive.io. A site is blocking your proxy: what we need to see lists the details that help. We can confirm what is recorded for the address. We cannot control how every third-party service displays it.
